Temple Study Tour
October 31 - November 12, 2008
Travel Details - What You Should Know

WEATHER
Israel's weather is very similar to southern California. The month of November is part of the fall transition period from the dry season to the wet season. We are after the Feast of Succoth, when we began praying for the rains to come, so bring along rain gear and some warmer clothes. You should also pack some cooler clothes for warmer weather. We do not know what to expect in this transition period.

DRESS
We require modest dress on this study program. Shorts are acceptable in certain situations, but always carry long pants or some cover-up outfit for churches and situations where short pants offend. Sleeveless shirts are not permitted due to cultural issues.

Please do not bring good dress-up clothes or jewelry. Jewelry is hard to keep track of while traveling and hotels are not always secure. AVIV, LTD. takes no responsibility for items left in hotel rooms. Do not bring anything that is politically sensitive (shirts, caps, or jewelry with political symbols) as we will be in a variety of political contexts.

It is best not to bring shirts with writing/slogans of any kind, as they only draw unnecessary attention to the fact that you are a tourist.

Bring comfortable (already broken-in or proven) walking shoes. They should be light weight with good traction. The program involves a lot of walking. Much of our time is spent out-of-doors so bring a hat with a brim and sunglasses with UV lenses.

LIST OF OTHER ITEMS TO BRING
Bring swimsuit and beach shoes (beaches are rocky), wash cloth, towel, plastic bag for wet swimsuit, warm clothing and rain gear (as stated above), water bottle, camera, flash, film (more than you would expect), batteries, transformer (Israel is 220 volt), hat with rim, sunglasses, personal medical and hygiene items, prescriptions for refills, pen, colored markers, lightweight day pack, 'wet wipes' and 'Kleenex', flashlight, sunscreen, all purpose soap, Bible and study materials (to be sent to you).

LUGGAGE
Each person is responsible for being able to carry their own luggage as porters are not always available. Due to limited luggage space on the bus we encourage you to limit yourself to one suitcase, one carry-on bag and camera bag.

LAUNDRY
Be prepared to do your laundry in the sink or through the hotel laundry service. Laundry facilities are scarce and expensive compared to the USA.

PASSPORTS
If you do not have a passport, begin application procedures immediately. Please make three photocopies of your passport. One to leave at home with a friend or relative (who can fax the copy if needed), one for the program leader, and one to keep with you in a secure bag, separate from your passport. If you lose your passport, it is much easier to replace if you have a copy.

SAFETY
Is it safe to travel in Israel? The overwhelming statistics of the safe and successful travel programs conducted each year gives an affirmative answer. Group travel in Israel is safer than travel by a car almost anywhere in your home country. Israel and the West Bank is much more quiet than the news media portray. The media find tense situations and accent them. AVIV, LTD. suggests that tourists are safer in Israel than in many big cities in the USA, and AVIV, LTD. staff monitor the political situation throughout every study program.

MONEY
Program costs cover all land expenses: housing, meals (not soft drinks and coffee or tea), group transportation, entrances, and tips. The only money you need to bring is for personal use: soft drinks or coffee or tea with your meals, snacks, personal taxi fares, entrances for places you go during free time, extra film, personal needs.

FREE TIME
A normal day involves breakfast at 7:00 am with bus or walking departure at 7:45 am. We spend full days in the field in order to make the most of our time at biblical sites and return to the hotel in time for supper. After the evening meal, your time is free unless the group chooses to meet together for worship and discussion. We may end several days a little earlier to give time for personal activities. You will be given some free time in Jerusalem for personal exploration and shopping.

HOUSING AND MEALS
All housing is in three-star or better hotels at half-board. Breakfast and dinner are served at the hotel. Picnic lunches are eaten in the field.
