Tales of the Torah
Hey Torah Kid Talmidim, it's time to learn more Torah! Moses wrote five books. They are the five books of the Torah. What is the name of the fourth book? Do you know? Here are the names of all five books in English and Hebrew. 1. Genesis (Bereshit) 2. Exodus (Shemot) 3. Leviticus (Viyikra) 4. Numbers (B'Midbar) 5. Deuteronomy (Debarim) The fourth book of the Torah is the book of Numbers. In Hebrew it is called the book of Bamidbar. Bamidbar means, "In the Wilderness." It is one of the very first Hebrew words of the book of Numbers, because the first verse of Numbers says, "The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the wilderness of Sinai." Look up Numbers 1:1-5 in your bible and find the English words in the wilderness or in the desert in the first verse. What month of the year is it? What did God want Moses and Aaron to do? The book of Bamidbar starts with Moses and Aaron counting up all the Israelites. Because it starts with a list of numbers, it is called the book of Numbers. But there is a lot more in this book of Torah than lists of Numbers! This is one of the very most exciting books of Torah! It tells the story of how the Israelites left Mount Sinai and traveled in the wilderness. It tells about following the fiery cloud to the promised land. It tells the story of the 12 spies sneaking into Canaan. Look out for Giants! The book of "In the Wilderness" tells the stories of Israel's adventures in the wilderness. You will find a story about poisonous snakes, a story of a bottomless pit, a story of an amazing walking-watering rock, a story about a dead stick that comes back to life, a story about a war with a horrid Giant named Og, a story about an evil sorcerer and much, much more! How did the grapes in the land of Eretz Yisrael (Israel) grow so large? ? Click here to find out. The Book of Bamidbar is full of exciting stories about Torah people. It tells the story of of how the Children of Israel had to wander in the wilderness for forty years. FORTY YEARS! That's a long time. Do you remember why they had to wander in the wilderness so long? Moses kept the children of Israel from getting lost in the wilderness. Do you know how to keep from getting lost? Click here to find out. In the Book of Bamidbar is the story of the how the children of Israel sang a song about finding water in the wilderness. What kind of song did Moses sing when he struck the stone to make it pour out water? Click here to find out. The book of Bamidbar is full of stories that are fun to read and study. Best of all, its' a mitzvah to learn the book of Bamidbar, because Bamidbar is a book of the Torah! Learning Torah is a mitzvah for Talmidim. |
